What to keep in mind

  • Not all probiotics are psychobiotics, and not all psychobiotics are equal.
  • Certain bacteria in the gut are able to produce neuroactive compounds and metabolites that can communicate with the brain. This communication pathway occurs via the vagus nerve which is bi-directional.
  • Tryptophan, which can come from diet or be produced by microbes in the gut, is a key component of a psychobiotic.
  • Tryptophan, which crosses the blood brain barrier, is a key building block, from which serotonin and melatonin are produced. Both of which are known neurotransmitters with mental health effects.
